Split chestnut wood

In Belgium and the Netherlands, these split chestnut posts are not often used. However, in France, these posts are used more often than round posts because their durability is much higher. This is because the split and sawn chestnut wood is taken from much heavier wood. These heavier chestnut logs have the advantage that they are much straighter and are also much older. Because the chestnut wood has been allowed to grow longer, the heartwood has also grown with it. The heartwood is the hardest part of the chestnut pole. Split and sawn chestnut wood therefore contains more heartwood than round posts and is therefore stronger and lasts longer.

Split chestnut posts are usually mixed in a bundle or pallet. To determine the diameter of the chestnut pole, the circumference of the pole is measured at the top of the pole. The most common size is the circumference 27cm/33cm. This is similar to a round post in diameter 10cm.
